This is the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, and the rosary will be said at 6:30 pm before the mass.
Blauvelt resident and pro-life activist Barbara (Betty) W. Braun, 86, passed away on April 15 from injuries sustained in a car accident.
Betty was one of the intellectual leaders of the pro-life movement in Rockland County. She was a champion of basic human rights, especially the most fundamental right, the right to life. She pursued her interests and activism with passion.
Betty was active in the Rockland Right to Life Committee since its inception. She was a candidate for the 22nd district of the U. S. House of Representatives in 1988, representing the Right to Life party. She was a founding member and the first president of the Rockland County Catholic Coalition, a lay organization of concerned Catholics.
In the mid 80’s she was chosen twice to appear on network television, speaking in reply to pro-abortion editorials on the evening news.
Her many op-ed pieces and letters to the editor in the Journal News presented a powerful and eloquent defense of the right to life. She was a superb debater.Betty taught at Rockland Community College, St. Thomas Aquinas College and Dominican College. She was a daily communicant at St. Catharine’s in Blauvelt for 55 years.
Betty is survived by her loving family, Oscar Henry, her husband of 60 years, her four sons and daughter and their spouses, 16 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren.
