Closing Ceremony for 40 Days for Life

The 40 Days of prayer and fasting to end abortion concluded at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 1, with a prayer service at the vigil site near the Planned Parenthood office on Perlman Drive in Spring Valley.

Eileen Peterson, co-director of the 40 Days for Life project in Rockland, welcomed the 30 volunteers who attended the closing ceremonies and thanked them for their faithful witness for Life. She noted the mainly positive response from the pedestrians and motorists who passed by during the long vigil. Continue reading

40 Days for Life: Week 5 — Bringing the Message

As the 40 days have passed, we’ve seen the changing of the seasons at the prayer site on Perlman Drive. Now, it’s no longer dark at 5 o’clock and the shrubs that were bare when we began our vigil of prayer to end abortion are now covered with white blossoms.

Now there are just a few days left. How many lives were saved, how many hearts moved — these are things known only to God. But we know He hears our prayers and listens to the cry of the distressed.

And we know that the message of LIfe was seen by thousands of people who drove past the vigil site during those 40 days. Like the apostles, the faithful volunteers accepted the mission — and on the curbside near Route 59 and the Planned Parenthood building, they set out for the deep and let down their net for the catch.

40 Days for Life: Week 4 — The Signs

To hold a sign at a rally or protest, you have to believe what it says — or you’d feel like a liar. At the 40 Days for Life, some of the signs are  beautiful, others sad, and some give warning (and it takes a lot of courage to hold them). But all together they make up the message, told in as many ways as there are people who come to give witness.

There are only about 10 days left. If you haven’t yet made a visit to pray at the 40 Days for Life prayer site on Perlman Drive, please come.

40 Days for Life: Week 3 — ‘Called to Solidarity’

“Every human being is called to solidarity in a world battle between life and death.”
Ignacio Ellacuria, Jesuit martyr in El Salvador

Doesn’t look like much of a battlefield does it? A bit of muddy ground on the side of the road next to a suburban strip mall. And these folks who come here – they look more like your friends and neighbors than any army in a “battle between life and death.”

And yet, that is what goes on here – every day. They come with their prayers and their love. And in this commonplace setting, these ordinary people quietly join ranks with all those around the world in prayer that hearts willl be changed, abortion will end, and lives will be saved.

If this is important to you, please come.  The power of a single prayer cannot be underestimated.

New people continue to come to the 40 Days of Life to pray, people who believe in the power of prayer.

It’s the power to save a life today or to plant a seed in the mind of someone who years later may consider abortion but remember a certain sign she once saw on the side of a road. It’s the power to bring healing and hope to someone after an abortion.

Do you want to do something to end abortion? Come and pray. Call the number below — or as the signs say at the stores, “Walk-ins are welcome.”

40 Days for Life: Week 1 — It’s Not Easy

How hard it is when the weather is brutal. Snow, rain, cold, and wind. The sacrifice is huge. You can barely see our volunteer in the rain and storm.

Yet, “Go out into the streets and proclaim the Gospel of Life!” said our Blessed Pope John Paul II.

And so we come to defend the most precious Gift of Life: wonderful family groups, the  Knights of Columbus, leading the charge to defend life, Msgr. McCabe from St. Mary’s, who has prayed here every Sunday for the last ten 40 Days for Life campaigns, and all our faithful volunteers.

This week a passerby asked what we were doing here. Our volunteer explained our calling to pray and be present to those in a crisis pregnancy. He thanked us for what we were doing.

That’s why we’re here.

What a gorgeous day God gave us to begin praying for the community to be Planned Parenthood-Free!

We begin with a beautiful prayer by our Vicar of Rockland County, Monsignor Weber.

We were so blessed to have our guitarist and three wonderful children from St. Joseph’s on drums and violin. The music was spiritually uplifting!

We prayed the Divine Mercy Chaplet and The Sorrowful Mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary. How incredible to see the youth coming and praying for LIFE! We are called to be a voice for the most innocent among us — the baby in the womb.

We know the truth — America is founded upon the INALIENABLE RIGHT TO LIFE. We are standing on Holy Ground — The Planned Parenthood Prayer Site.

For 40 Days, we will be the hope for those who feel they have no choice. NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE WITH GOD.

40 DAYS FOR LIFE UPDATE: Closing Prayer

The Fall 2011 40 Days for Life came to a close at 3 pm on Sunday, Nov. 6. The national campaign of prayer and fasting to end abortion took place at over 300 sites, and it was reported that 646 babies were saved. One of those moms who were contemplating abortion but who ultimately chose life for her unborn child was from Rockland. Click here to watch a video of the events of Day 40 in Spring Valley.

Rabbi Nolson Leiter of Torah Jews for Decency spoke before the ceremoney regarding the upcoming elections and  the importance of electing candidates who are pro-life, pro-traditional family, and pro-God.

Then Msgr. Robert McCabe of St. Mary of the Assumption in Haverstraw prayed that God would protect Life and this community. There were hymns and patriotic songs, and Eileen Peterson, Richard Bruno, and John Ferrao, who organized the Rockland 40 Days, said a few words.

They thanked the many people who had come to stand and pray throughout the 40 Days and said they could rejoice because they had made it to the finish line — so many prayers, so much perseverance, all faiths upholding the Fifth Commandment — “Thou shalt not kill” — and taking a stand for Life.
